Who We Are

Bald Solidarity exists to stir local compassion
and assist global action.

Globally, women endure a variety of abominable circumstances. They are coerced into sex or outright raped. They are beaten. They are deprived of an education. Some are treated as second class-citizens and/or property. Some are confined to their homes unless they go out with a male relative. Female genital mutilation is still a reality in much of Africa. Young girls are forced into sexual slavery in Asia and Eastern Europe. We live in a country where we are guaranteed the basic rights that women the world over are denied. We want to unite to address issues that in any way strip women of their full personhood. We need to value everyone equally to have a vibrant, safe, productive global community. Let's get to work to make sure this happens.

So, why are you shaving your heads?

Historically, a shaved head has been a sign of grief for many cultures. For us, it's a sign of grief over the mistreatment of our sisters worldwide, but it will also serve as a bold statement that we are serious about doing our part to see these injustices ended. It's a way of standing next to these women, though they may be thousands of miles away. It's a way we can show them they aren't forgotten, though they may live in circumstances and among people who make them feel invisible. Finally, it's a way that we can change their circumstances for the better.

Ok, what do you want me to do?

We believe that most people, if brought face to face with the atrocities suffered by women around the world, would be moved to action. The problem is that these problems aren't in our faces. They are distant and too often faceless problems, and we are consumed with the details of living our own lives. We find it hard to really put ourselves in the shoes of others who are suffering, though we feel we should.

Bald Solidarity provides an answer to the question we all face after we've had that wrenching gut reaction to horrible injustice. "I'm just one person... what can I do?" We want to give people an opportunity to unite their own personal community around a cause they're passionate about.
