Frequently Asked Questions
What if I can't shave, but I want to gather sponsorship?
We understand that there are those of you who can't shave your heads due to a job
you'd like to keep or a marriage that you'd like to keep intact, etc. But if you'd
still like to participate and gather sponsorship, we are printing up latex caps
(swim caps) with our website on the side. You can gather sponsorship to wear the
cap for a certain period of time. I.e., someone donates $10 and you wear the cap
for an hour. You can pick up a cap at our shaving event in Seattle, or order one
if you're anywhere else.Anyone who shaves will be gathering sponsorship from family, friends, coworkers, and anyone else they'd like to ask. Sponsors can donate through our website by clicking on the name of their "shavee." This year, all the money we raise will go to Equality Now, an organization working around the globe to end injustices perpetrated against women. To go to Equality Now's website, click here. To see their ratings and records on Charity Navigator (a charity watchdog website), click here. Why wouldn't I just donate to Equality Now?
You can! Please do! We're just giving you the chance to donate in the name of someone
who's passionate enough about these issues to lose their hair. We want to act as
a community organizing and on-the-ground fundraising arm. We want to make as many
people aware of and passionate about these issues as possible. The point is to draw
national and international attention to these issues, to send a message of hope
to hurting women and to sound a call for change in their circumstances. However
that can be accomplished is fine with us. We hope you'll donate through our site,
and that you'll choose to join up with us by spreading the word to your own community,
whether or not you choose to shave.
Why isn't the money going directly to Bald Solidarity?
The simplest answer is that we don't have boots on the ground. Eventually we hope
to be able to send volunteers and board members overseas to make personal contacts
with international nonprofits that are working directly with the women affected
by these issues. But for now, since we're just starting off, we're teaming up with
a well-established, efficient, effective organization - Equality Now. |
